Traditional drawing rules apply: a bold outline you can read at arm's length, a limited palette laid in flat and solid, and shading kept simple and strong. Bold drawing is the most forgiving kind of tattoo: it sits happily on an upper arm, thigh, calf, chest or back, and it scales from a palm-sized piece to a full panel without losing its punch.

Tattooing notes: American Traditional (Old School)

Placement: Traditional designs sit best on flatter canvases — upper arm, forearm, calf, shoulder, thigh — placed as a strong single emblem with a little open skin around it.

Size: Give a traditional piece at least three to four inches. The bold fields of color need room to stay open; palm-sized and up is the sweet spot.

How it ages: The best-aging style there is: heavy outlines hold the color in, and a traditional piece still reads clearly after decades. Sunscreen keeps the reds punchy.
