Every tone in this piece is built from individual dots — thousands of them — denser where the shadow deepens, sparse where the light catches. Fine work like this ages best with a little room around it — forearm, inner arm, ankle, shoulder blade or ribs are classic placements, and your artist will want to size it so the smallest lines stay honest as the skin settles over the years; the detailed passages usually want to be at least palm-sized.

Placement: Soft stippled gradients forgive curvature — arms, calves, thighs, shoulders and backs all work. Hands and feet blur the fine grain fastest.

Size: Gradients need room to stay grainy instead of merging into grey: three inches minimum for simple work, five and up for detailed stippled scenes.

How it ages: One of the gentlest-aging styles: dots soften into the gradient rather than losing detail. Sparse fine fields may want a refresh after some years.
